Moving from dropbox to syncthing - Mon, Jan 25, 2016
I’ve been wanting to move from dropbox for a long time. Not because I dislike the service, but I wanted more control. Even if it came with more responsibility.
Syncthing has easy to install OS X, Android and Linux applications, which made the move even easier. Things that will make this easier for you:
- Setup a root folder. Do not share this folder
- Create sub-folders for everything you want to sync.
Otherwise you might end up running into creating infinite copies of everything.
A positive aspect of moving from dropbox to syncthing was that I could create a centralized syncthing server. This server became the master-server that automatically share everything with the devices that pairs with it.
I also like that each syncthing application is a server application. Meaning, you can easily create shares on the fly - no need for logins or syncing to the cloud. Things that helped me:
- A very nice playbook for ansible - https://github.com/escaped/ansible-syncthing
- Syncthing bar for OS X - https://github.com/m0ppers/syncthing-bar/releases
- Syncthing for Android - https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.nutomic.syncthingandroid
